Fresh Pow

An all-in-one winter sports application that you know you’ve needed.

When deciding on what to include within the application FreshPow, keeping the user in mind was at the upmost importance. As a long time snowboarder I drew inspiration from my personal experience with winter sport applications and decided on creating an application that could fix pre-existing problems within the community of winter sports.

Freshpow eliminates the need for multiple applications. There are dozens of applications on the market that are tailored specifically for winter sport athletes and enthusiasts. most of those being single purpose use. One may even find themselves downloading multiple applications for one specific thing, such as weather applications or GPS location apps. Freshpow brings all the necessary tools and resources into one application.

This application allows the user to view local mountains and resorts near them, with ratings/reviews as well as real-time capacity meter. Users will also be able to check weather radars with the click of a button, shop an online user to user market for new and used gear, Track and save runs with the in-app GPS location, and finally meet new people within the community through the buddy system which allows individuals 18 years and older to make everlasting friendships on the mountain.

The User flow gives a quick breakdown of how the user will be able to navigate through the application. Starting with the splash page and login screen, and bringing them right to the home page. Once at the home page the main navigation bar will take the user right to where they want to go.

I wanted the application have a familiar relaxed feel to it, yet still have a bold and clean unique presence. The mood board demonstrates those aesthetic feelings through the use of color. with light blues, grey and white but contrasted by sharp reds and black.

Working with native applications I decided to go with two fonts that would be seen throughout the application depending on what device the user may be using. Using Roboto for Android and San Fransisco for iOS. For the application branding the font Kamryn was chosen. A very clean font that allows the app to show a bit of its fun personality. The style board also showcases the final color palette chosen and well as the the iconography. The icons will be shared across both Android and iOS with the exception of few device-native icons.

Once the styleboard was completed I began designing the low-fidelity wireframes. I revisited the user flow to help me with how the navigation throughout the application should appear. Once I established a basic wireframe that I was happy with, I slowly started to build on it. Eventually designing the greyscale, mid-fidelity wireframe.

The mobile gestures help demonstrate how a user might navigate throughout the application, for both native Android and iOS. While very similar in functionality the haptic feedback given to the user may be slightly different. These screens help to demonstrate that.

In the final stages of development, several participants were gathered to help test the application throughout the prototyping stage. The users were asked to navigate throughout the screens of the application and to give feedback. The feedback was encouraged to be both positive and constructive, on what they enjoyed or thought needed to be adjusted or improved on. This feedback was an important part of the design process because for the first time, the application was seen and used by users. The feedback received helped drive the final iteration of the high fidelity wireframe, and complete the design and development of the application FreshPow.

The final mockups shown here for both Android and iOS showcase how the application will appear of the users phone.
